Support more students to pursue their passions on Dam Proud Day 2022

By Cari Longman

On April 27, our community is coming together for Oregon State University’s third annual Dam Proud Day – a single exciting day to support the success of our College of Science students. We are dedicated to building a better, stronger and more inclusive community where all students can pursue their passions and find their place in the College of Science.

This year, the College is raising support through three different funds that will directly benefit our students:

  • SURE Science, which provides scholarships for undergraduate research
  • Science for All, which supports our non-traditional students
  • The Biochemistry & Biophysics Excellence fund, which supports students in that department engage in research, travel to conferences and make it to graduation.

The College of Science is committed to supporting all our students achieve their academic goals.

Make a difference. Find your opportunity to support our students.

The Science for All fund was established in 2022 to help students that don’t fit the traditional college student mold. These students might be older, military veterans or primary caregivers. They might work full-time jobs while taking their classes and trying to change career tracks. And some of them realized their passion for science or mathematics later in life or want to finish what they started before the challenges of life got in the way. These students inspire us, and we are proud to be a part of their journey. With your help through the Science for All Fund, they can tap the resources they need to reach their goals.

Oregon State funds more high-impact undergraduate research experiences than any other university in the state. Yet we are limited in how many scholarships we can offer. Last year, 86 students applied for 43 SURE Science awards. Gifts to the Undergraduate Research Frontiers Fund support SURE Science scholarships, which give students valuable hands-on learning experiences. SURE scholars participate in real research under the guidance of a faculty mentor and develop new skill sets beyond the classroom. Past participants have taken part in groundbreaking discoveries, published papers and launched their careers in research.

Finally, the Biochemistry and Biophysics (BB) Excellence Fund supports BB students to engage in research, travel to conferences and receive valuable training opportunities. Last year, the fund provided need-based scholarships to four students. This year, their goal is to raise funds for at least six more $1,000 scholarships and three paid research fellowships for the coming academic year.

We encourage everyone in our community – alumni, faculty, students, family members and friends – to support science with a gift on April 27. Each of these funds will have exciting challenges throughout the day that will unlock thousands in additional support. Gifts of any amount can make a huge difference.

Together, we can open doors to fulfilling futures for even more students each year.

Because no matter where you are coming from, you belong in the College of Science! Join us on April 27 and help even more science students achieve their dreams to build a better world.
