Extending the Reach and Impact of Science

College of Science Strategic Plan 2022-2027

The College of Science at Oregon State University was formally established in 1932. Oregon State is one of only three universities with a land, sun, space and sea grant designation, and is one of only 40 public universities with the Carnegie Foundation Tier 1 very high research activity and community engagement designation. We are Oregon’s statewide university with a presence in Corvallis, in Bend at OSU-Cascades, on the coast at Newport, and in Portland, and with educational programs, extension activities, and engagement in all 36 counties.

The College of Science is home to the core life, statistical, physical and mathematical sciences within seven departments: Biochemistry and Biophysics, Chemistry, Integrative Biology, Mathematics, Microbiology, Physics and Statistics. The College of Science supports more than 3,600 undergraduate students and 500 graduate students (including dual majors) within nine undergraduate, eight M.S. and seven Ph.D. degree programs.

In Fall 2021, the College of Science started its planning process to create our Strategic Plan 2022-2027. Over a yearlong process, in which extensive input was collected from our internal community, external strategic partners at OSU, and external thought leaders in science, we developed a plan that embeds and integrates our recent 2021-2024 strategic diversity action plan, "Embedding Equity, Access and Inclusion," and aligns with OSU’s Strategic Plan SP4.0.

Implementation

In the academic year 2022–2023, the college will launch, plan and begin the implementation of this strategic plan to be carried out over 2022-2027. A college-wide strategic planning implementation committee, with representation from all seven departments and the dean’s office, will lead the implementation of this plan and develop a timeline for implementing, assessing and adapting as needed the actions and tactics in each of the four goals of this plan. In addition, the implementation committee will further develop metrics and key indicators of success to assess the impact of actions and tactics that are implemented.
