Roadmap to your career

Thinking about your passions, interests and goals early in your academic career helps you create a solid plan for success. As a science student, you have access to career resources, guidance, coaching and training to prepare you for professional experiences and communication skills that are highly valued by employers.

It’s never too soon to get started exploring and planning your career path. Our career development services include many resources, tools and programs to help science students define and pursue their goals and gain competency in networking, professionalism and leadership skills necessary for success in an increasingly competitive, global workforce.

It is helpful to have a career blueprint to stay on course.

First year

Actively participate in both in-classroom and out-of-classroom activities related to your major. Research your major to get a good understanding of what it involves, and future careers it may lead to.

Sophomore year

Attend career events and workshops to help reinforce your career interest or spark new career ideas. Start looking for opportunities to gain hands-on experiences, such as internships, research or volunteering projects. Hands-on experience is the best way to determine if the path you have chosen is right for you.

Junior year

Make sure you engage in at least one hands-on experience, with another lined up for the summer. Continue participating in career events and workshops, including the student-alumni networking event.

Senior year

Have two career-related experiences completed and be on the lookout for others to gain a competitive edge in the job market and even graduate school. Optimize your resume, cover letter and interview skills and get ready to negotiate your first job offer.
