The College of Science and Ecampus are partnering on a yearlong speaker series to bring educational leaders and innovators to campus to highlight best practices in developing and teaching science courses online.
The first speaker in the series is Gerd Kortemeyer, an associate professor of physics at Michigan State University, who will present a series of workshops and meetings November 17-18 where he will share his expertise and research on the effectiveness of online education.
Science faculty are invited to a special workshop and lunch on November 17 from noon to 2:30 pm in the Memorial Union, Horizon room. RSVP here by November 14--space is limited.
Dr. Kortemeyer is a leader in developing tools for online learning, content management, assessment, learning analytics and educational data mining at Michigan State.
His research focuses on post-secondary STEM education in general, and physics education research in particular. He is a leader in developing tools for online learning, content management, assessment, learning analytics, and educational data mining.
Dr. Kortemeyer's visit to OSU will give science and other STEM faculty as well as campus leaders the opportunity to learn about:
- Michigan State's approach to exams, homework and reading materials in online science courses
- The faculty teaching experience
- How to generate student engagement and active learning online
- His research findings on synchronous discussion in face-to-face courses vs. asynchronous discussions in online courses
- His leadership on the LON-CAPA Project, a unique learning management system well-suited for science disciplines
Upcoming guest speakers
The College of Science and OSU Ecampus plan to invite at least two more speakers from a national pool of science faculty to OSU in the 2016-17 academic year.
Online learning at Oregon State
Oregon State University is a recognized leader in the field of online learning and online course development in STEM fields. In October 2016, integrative biology instructor Andrew Bouwma and Genevieve Weber, an instructor and postdoctoral scholar in the College of Agricultural Sciences – in conjunction with the Ecampus Course Development and Training team – won a national award from Eduventures for a “creative use of technology to boost student success.”
The team closely collaborated on a 3D animation project for a new online biology course series that effectively puts a microscope in the hands of every distance student.
In 2014, OSU Ecampus won the Online Learning Consortium’s Award for Excellence in Faculty Development for Online Teaching – one of the industry’s most prestigious awards.
